healthy coupleThe balance between the health benefits associated with sauna therapy and any potential hazards are so one sided as to make the debate mute. In the event that an individual is afflicted with high blood pressure or heart disease, caution will be necessary. Always consult with your doctor whenever in doubt before trying something new like sauna therapy and do not attempt to shock your system by diving into a pool of cold water as many Finns do.

Whenever you enjoy a session in a sauna, the blood flow near your skin surface is stimulated and produces sweat to level your body temperature. Sweat is the number one reason why you should be taking a sauna on a regular basis. The byproducts of sweating are the elimination of unhealthy and life threatening toxins that accumulate, from multiple sources, over time, in the tissues and organs of the body. Eliminating these toxins goes a long way to ensuring a healthier, properly functioning body environment.

A lot has been said about the use of saunas by pregnant women. Several years ago a study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that found some association between neural-tube defects and heat exposure from saunas, hot tubs, and fever during the first three months of pregnancy. Neural-tube defects include anencephaly and spina bifida, both hazardous abnormalities. The biggest offender was found to be hot tubs and a lack of proper hydration which pregnant women should always approach with caution.

By contrast to the American view on pregnancy and sauna use, Finland has a long tradition of actual childbirth in saunas. Finnish doctors give their stamp of approval on a regular basis to women that wish to continue the use of a sauna up to and including the delivery day of their bundle of joy. I personally would not recommend this to most American women who do not have a long history of sauna use. At all times consult with your physician before undertaking any potentially harmful endeavor.

The increasing popularity of infrared saunas has been a boon to those seeking a healthier lifestyle. Far Infrared rays are selectively absorbed by body tissues. The internal production of infrared energy that normally occurs within our tissues is associated with a variety of healing responses. Infrared energy boosts this healing process to a much higher level to maximize the healing response in tissue under repair.

There is a large percentage of people suffering from chronic illnesses that find the high temperatures inside a regular sauna unbearable. In the Far-InfraRed sauna, invisible light rays emanate from several Far-InfraRed emitters. This energy penetrates deep into the fat and muscles of the body, thereby creating a more thorough detoxifying effect on the deeper tissues of the body. Since the air temperature in a far infrared sauna remains much consistently lower than in a traditional sauna, there is a tendency to feel much more comfortable. Sweating, more often then not, occurs even before the person feels hot at all and the sweating is usually more profuse than in a traditional sauna.

Regardless of which sauna system you choose to incorporate into your life, you will be guaranteeing yourself an improvement in your overall health, an increase the value of your home and and a special place to escape the hustle and bustle and everyday life.
